How to Advocate in Nutrition and Dietetics

This session will provide an overview of advocacy and practical tools that can be applied to different scenarios and issues. 

This session will cover: 

  • The link between communities, stakeholder engagement, providing value to members and advocacy
  • Identifying stakeholders and adapting the approach
  • Key messages, opportunities and maintaining relationships 

Real life examples from the 'frontline' will be used to demonstrate how the tools can be applied to the key priority advocacy areas for Dietitians Australia. 

Speakers: 

Tara Diversi (APD) is the current President of Dietitians Australia. Since graduating in 2003, she has worked in almost all areas of dietetics. To compliment her dietetics qualifications she holds a MBA, two postgraduate qualifications in psychology and a graduate certificate in higher education. Since graduating, Tara has been active in advocating for herself, her profession, her clients and the communities she serves. She believes that we can all make a difference if we contribute with our strengths and passions, regardless of what they are. 

Anne Pleash is a leader, communications strategist, and advisor to politicians, industry, local governments and regional and Indigenous communities. Anne has 15 years of deep expertise in stakeholder engagement and negotiation strategies on high-pressure and politically charged issues and environments. Anne has worked in Indigenous communities, professional consulting, executive leadership and as Chief of Staff to Bob Katter, Federal Member for Kennedy. Anne is regularly sought by industry and political leaders for her expertise in the most appropriate ways to build relationships and advocate in complex and often, sensitive environments and in managing crises. Anne is a trained mediator and uses finely tuned negotiation skills to drive outcomes. Anne is a passionate leader that empowers others to fulfil their roles with confidence, excellence and enthusiasm. In 2018, Anne became the 207th Australian to swim the English Channel and is actively involved in Surf Life Saving.
