Diabetes Update Day 2022

Due to Zoom fatigue, this year's fully virtual event is a little shorter, however it is just as jam packed! Key topics include, improving communication, stigma in our practice, type 2 diabetes in younger people and weight neutral management of diabetes. The panel returns, along with a nutrition and diabetes from different cultures session. Note, this event commences at 10am (AEDT) to help cater for our Western state friends. 


Speakers:

Lauren Bais
has been an Accredited Practising Dietitian for the past 18 years and is also a Diabetes Educator. She currently works as a Dietitians at Diabetes Victoria and has been there for the past 9 years. She is an OzDAFNE facilitator, OzDAFNE pump facilitator, and is involved in the OzDAFNE Protein and Fat working group. She has worked in Health Literacy projects in large community health services in Melbourne's west as well as at Diabetes Victoria. With any new and existing project she is involved in with Diabetes Victoria she uses Health Literacy principles to help improve the reach and understanding for all Victorians. She has had training in Motivational Interviewing, Health Coaching, and the Flinders Model. 

Tanya Cooper has a background in Clinical Psychology. Over the past 20 years she has worked across several different roles in community health, specialist drug and alcohol agencies, hospital inpatient and outpatient settings, private practice, and training and education. Currently, Tanya balances her time across working in a private psychology practice in Melbourne and teaching at LaTrobe University in the Department of Dietetics, Nutrition and Sport. Her interest areas include teaching Allied Health Students professional communication skills, Motivational Interviewing and Nutrition Counselling.  Tanya's mission is to help health providers create their own sense of compass towards compassionate, sustainable and evidence-based ways of practice that support person-centred care. She also believes that conversations about change can be transformative in healthcare when we create space for partnership, curiosity and respecting people’s autonomy.  Tanya lives with late onset Type 1 Diabetes and Addison's Disease, and has lived experience of the detrimental impacts of stigma and unconscious bias on her healthcare and quality of life. Outside of work Tanya enjoys walks with her dog Marvin, yoga and karate.

Dr. Natalie Nanayakkara is a clinical and academic endocrinologist. After graduating from medical school at the University of Melbourne, Natalie completed physician training at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Austin Health and the Monash Medical Centre, specialising in endocrinology.  Her research interests include the prevention, diagnosis and management of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Natalie has presented her work at several    major national and international meetings in the past five years in addition to a number of publications in the diabetes and endocrine area.  She has assisted in the formulation of national guidelines and educational programs for the Australian Diabetes Society and worked on the Australian National Diabetes Audit (ANDA) in addition to work on national clinical trials. Her PhD examined age related differences in the pathophysiology and management of diabetes and its complications.

Electra Ulrich is an Accredited Practising Dietitian. She currently works at Royal Melbourne Hospital as a Clinical Educator. Electra has worked in diabetes for over a decade, and discovered the Non Diet Approach in 2014 through a workshop she attended. Since then, she has been implementing more of a weight neutral approach in her dietetic practice. Electra is currently completing her Masters of Clinical Education and her vision is to see Weight Neutral Care taught in every dietetic course.

Alison Bennett is an Accredited Practising Dietitian with postgraduate qualifications in Diabetes Education and Management. Alison has worked in community settings providing dietary advise and support to clients and small groups to help them manage all types of diabetes. She assisted in the development of a state wide preventative health program and has extensive experience delivering training to health professionals.  Alison is passionate about meeting people where they are at in managing their health. She enjoys working alongside clients to identify their health goals and helping them take steps towards sustainable behaviour changes to achieve these goals.

Lindiwe (Lindi) Mpala, is an Accredited Practising Dietitian and founder of Mindful Choices Nutrition. She currently sits on several advisory boards and working groups in Brisbane providing her expertise in the multi-cultural space. Lindi is currently resident at the Ethnic Communities Council of Queensland (ECCQ) as a public health dietitian. She coordinates healthy lifestyle programs tailored for culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) groups across QLD. In her role, Lindi has worked closely with migrants and refugees from Arabic, Vietnamese, Pacific Islander and Chinese communities to name a few.  Most recently she launched her own private practice, Mindful Choices Nutrition - which specialises in chronic diseases of lifestyle.  As a migrant herself, Lindi is passionate about enhancing nutrition education and improving quality of life in CALD communities.

Carmen Bouchier, (Director, APD) is an Accredited Practising Dietitian who graduated from the University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, in 1999. She worked extensively as a Clinical Dietitian in Hospitals across South Africa and Australia before founding Perfect Balance Nutrition. Carmen is passionate about holistic patient care. She has over 21 years of experience in all aspects of clinical nutrition, including Type 1, Type 2 and Gestational Diabetes.  She has worked with Diabetes patients across hospitals, community settings, and private practice in South Africa and Australia.  She worked for over ten years as a qualified fitness and aerobics instructor, giving her a unique understanding and insight into the role of nutrition in all aspects of sports, strength training, and body image.  Carmen mentors the dietitians in her practice in her unique way to produce consistent, positive outcomes and excellence in patient care.

Farah Wilson is an Accredited Practising Dietitian and Diabetes Educator working as a Dietitian in the Endocrinology Department at Perth Children's Hospital (PCH). Prior to working at PCH, Farah has working at Diabetes WA, Diabetes Victoria, and in community health based organisatins in regional Victoria. She has an ongoing interest in working with people managing type 1 and 2 diabetes, particularly the culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) population. While her parents are Lebanese, Farah was born in Australia but lived in Lebanon during her teenage years. Her family continue to cook Lebanese-style food most of the time, and maintain as many cultural practices as possible. 

Edward Pascoe is a queer man who was diagnosed with late-onset type one diabetes in December of 2019 and attended the OzDAFNE course in 2021, where he gained knowledge on how to handle his new diagnosis. Since doing OzDafne, his HBA1C has dropped and has helped him maintain his blood glucose levels and keep himself within the target range 90% of the time.
