The Centre for Advanced Learning (CAL) and Child Health in Life and Disease (ChildD) are excited to bring you the one-day virtual course as part of the National Paediatric Training Course. 

Learning outcomes:

Management of Gastrointestinal Disease

  • Understand the medical and nutritional management of Inflammatory Bowel Disease
  • Calculate micro and macro requirements of a child with Inflammatory Bowel Disease
  • Accurately prescribe exclusive enteral nutrition for a child with Crohn’s disease
  • Understand the diagnosis of coeliac disease and the common nutritional deficiencies associated with the condition
  • Understand the differences between primary and secondary lactose and other disaccharide intolerances
  • Understand the causes of childhood constipation and the medical and nutritional treatment approaches

Advanced Gastroenterology and Hepatology

  • Calculate micro and macro nutrient requirements of a child with liver disease
  • Describe common complications of liver disease and understand nutritional approaches to manage these 
  • Understand the complexities around the nutritional management of a child with short bowel syndrome
  • Accurately describe the different types of short bowel syndrome and the nutritional management goal of each type
  • Understand the stages of bowel adaptation and outline the nutritional strategies for each stage 
  • Devise appropriate meal plans for children with short bowel syndrome and liver failure

Parenteral Nutrition

  • Identify indications and contraindications for PN in children
  • Demonstrate knowledge of physical access requirements to administer PN
  • Know the safe upper and lower limits of fluid, protein, fat, glucose administration
  • Establish micronutrients requirements including electrolytes, trace elements, vitamins and minerals
  • Demonstrate safe and effective practice in initiating PN
  • Monitor tolerance and requirements of PN in the paediatric patient
  • Identify potential complications to prevent and treat them as they occur
  • Implement cyclic PN
  • Identify paediatric patients appropriate for Home PN and monitoring 

 

Educator:

Julia Fox has been a clinical paediatric dietitian for over 15 years and is currently the Clinical Leader of Dietetic Services for Surgical and Gastroenterology services at a large tertiary hospital in Queensland. Julia is a recognised leader in the clinical dietetic management of children with dependence on parenteral nutrition, and the nutritional management of children with complex gastrointestinal disorders and has presented at national and international scientific meetings on these areas. Julia has utilised her skills to advocate for and achieve formal improvements in service delivery, particularly in the area of parenteral nutrition. Julia is on the council for Australasian Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (AuSPEN) and recently established and chairs the Paediatric Committee for AuSPEN.

Access to the course: Those who register by 10 April 2023 will have access to the LMS from 11 April 2023. Those who register after 10 April 2023 will be uploaded to the LMS on 17 April 2023. Access to the LMS will end of all registrants on 28 April 2023. Any materials you wish to keep must be downloaded by 28 April 2023.

CPD Logs: Your CPD logs will be automatically updated after this course. This course is worth 14 CPD hours (including both pre-reading and course time).
