Dietitians have an important role to play as “food experts” in helping the public to navigate a complicated food system. As public consciousness is raised about food safety scares, inhumane treatment of animals, rising grocery prices and the environmental impacts of industrial food systems, it is essential that dietitians understand what is happening within the overall food system and assist people to make informed choices that support their personal health and values. Dietitians already have the knowledge, skills and professional capacity to contribute to discussion toward a more sustainable food system. This webinar will introduce the concepts of Civic Dietetics and Food Democracy, and explore how dietitians working in a range of settings can contribute to a healthier, more sustainable food system.

Speaker Bio:

Dr Sue Booth: Dr Sue Booth is a dietitian with over 25 years experience and has worked in a range of settings; community health, private practice, government and universities. She has a PhD in public health nutrition and her thesis examined food insecurity amongst homeless young people in Adelaide. Her areas of research interest are food insecurity, alternative food systems and food policy.
