Nutrition and Mental Health
The webinar is brought to you by the DA Education Centre and the DA Policy and Advocacy Team as part of the Advocacy Insights Complimentary CPD Campaign (2021).

Join us for the first of three webinars in the Advocacy Insights series focusing on mental health. Tracy Burrows and Stephanie Heard will provide a presentation followed by a panel discussion with Scott Teasdale and Michelle Hsu.

This webinar aims to:

- Increase the knowledge of the diversity of mental health conditions
- Define mental health and describe key features of common mental health conditions
- Recognise the prevalence of mental health conditions and their relevance to dietitians and where diet can play a role

Speakers:

Tracy Burrows is a Fellow of Dietitians Australia and a Professor in Nutrition and Dietetics at The University of Newcastle. She has developed a program of research in nutrition and mental health with a focus on addictive overeating in addition to other areas including weight management, e-health and dietary assessment. She has over 180 peer reviewed publications and received >$6 million in research funding and received numerous prestigious awards including The Hunter Medical research institute mid-career researcher of the year in 2020.

Stephanie Heard has been an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) for over 19 years, specialising in mental health, disordered eating and weight concerns in various capacities for over 15 years. She has occupied an array of dietetics roles including Senior Dietitian at the Queensland Eating Disorder Service (QuEDS) Day Program and Consultation Service, and as the Eating Disorder Coordinator for CYMHS; she is currently employed in the private practice River Oak Health in Brisbane as a Dietitian and Family Therapist. Steph has a dedicated interest in mental health and the health behaviours associated with nutrition and movement. She is passionate about providing evidence-based practice to health and wellness and promotes a holistic, systemic approach to her dietetic practice. Steph is also a qualified Exercise Physiologists (Bachelor of Applied Science - Human Movements) and Family Therapist (Masters in Mental Health - Family Therapy), she welcomes working with individuals, couples and families.

Dr Scott Teasdale is an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) and Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the UNSW School of Psychiatry. Dr Teasdale specialised as a mental health dietitian within the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District Mental Health Service, completing his PhD alongside this role. His current focus is translational psychiatric research. Dr Teasdale is an ambassador for Equally Well Australia, which aims to improve the physical health of people living with mental illness. Dr Teasdale has contributed to the Dietitians Australia (DA) Mental Health Interest Group and Practice-based Evidence in Nutrition (PEN). He has received the UNSW Postgraduate Research Dean's Award for Outstanding Thesis, DA's National Award of Merit, DA's Research in Practice Conference Award and DA's New Researcher Conference Award. Dr Teasdale's lead-author study on nutrition interventions in people living with severe mental illness was cited as evidence in World Health Organisations guidelines.

Michelle Hsu is an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) working in the community mental health space as part of the Keeping the Body in Mind program in the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District. She currently works with adults with serious mental health issues and complex trauma. She is also the coordinator of the MHANDi committee, a working party of the DA Mental Health Interest Group whom develop and review resources for dietitians about mental health related topics. She is interested in making quality physical health interventions more accessible and ubiquitous for people with mental health issues. Her experiences include working within the NDIS and Medicare systems, and lifestyle and nutrition research in intellectual disability with the 3DN team at UNSW and chronic disease through the Boden Collaboration (previously the Boden Institute) for Obesity, Nutrition, Exercise and Eating Disorders.
