Healthy and Environmentally Sustainable Diets: The role of dietitians in transforming our food system.

To promote human and planetary health, the population needs to adopt health and sustainable diet-related practices, while contributing to a whole-of-food-system transformation which supports and enables these practices. Across the entire continuum of dietetic practice from policy action to individual nutrition therapy, dietitians can play a critical role in minimising the environmental degradation caused by our food system, while simultaneously improving public health outcomes. Join us for an overview of current evidence, key policy recommendations and some insights into how we can all modify our practice to align with Dietitians Australia's recent position paper on healthy and environmentally sustainable diets.

Appointed by Dietitians Australia to lead the development of this position paper, Liza Barbour has over 18 years of practical experience as a Public Health Dietitian, working in metropolitan, rural and remote settings in Australia and internally. For the past 10 years, Liza has been teaching nutrition and dietetics students at Monash University, including a unit she designed on food sustainability systems. This compulsory unit supports students to learn about our global food system and all factors, including economic, social, political and environmental, which drive and influence the environmental sustainability of the system. Liza is involved in international research exploring the role tertiary educators play in inspiring and preparing dietitians to improve this global food system. Liza is currently completing her PhD which explores the role of local government policy interventions in promoting the uptake of healthy and environmentally sustainable diet-related practices.
