Nutrition and Mental Health a Deeper Dive: Communication, dietary assessment and treatement

The webinar is brought to you by the Dietitians Australia Education Centre and the Dietitians Australia Policy and Advocacy Team as part of the 'Advocacy Insights' Complimentary Collaborations Campaign (2021).

This webinar will focus on key communication skills that dietitians have that can be effective in mental health. Specifically focusing on general elements of communication, dietary assessment and treatment, including top tips for how to create and have a meaningful experience for the client as well as looking after your own well-being and safety. It will involve a range of practitioners from diverse backgrounds in mental health, including lived experience.

Learning Objective: To gain confidence in nutritional counselling of people with mental illness.

Speakers:

Tracy Burrows is a Fellow of Dietitians Australia and a Professor in Nutrition and Dietetics at The University of Newcastle. She has developed a program of research in nutrition and mental health with a focus on addictive overeating in addition to other areas including weight management, e-health and dietary assessment. She has over 180 peer reviewed publications and received >$6 million in research funding and received numerous prestigious awards including The Hunter Medical research institute mid-career researcher of the year in 2020.

Stephanie Heard has been an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) for over 19 years, specialising in mental health, disordered eating and weight concerns in various capacities for over 15 years. She has occupied an array of dietetics roles including Senior Dietitian at the Queensland Eating Disorder Service (QuEDS) Day Program and Consultation Service, and as the Eating Disorder Coordinator for CYMHS; she is currently employed in the private practice River Oak Health in Brisbane as a Dietitian and Family Therapist. Steph has a dedicated interest in mental health and the health behaviours associated with nutrition and movement. She is passionate about providing evidence-based practice to health and wellness and promotes a holistic, systemic approach to her dietetic practice. Steph is also a qualified Exercise Physiologists (Bachelor of Applied Science - Human Movements) and Family Therapist (Masters in Mental Health - Family Therapy), she welcomes working with individuals, couples and families.

Jaslyn Dugmore is a private practice dietitian working across various NGO organisations in Brisbane. Her practice focuses on community-based group work with people living with substance use concerns and dual diagnoses. Jas' approach is informed by her lived experiences of complex mental illness, and the principles of motivational interviewing, social justice, and Health at Every Size (HAES). Jas is currently a PhD candidate at QUT exploring food and eating experiences of people living with co-occurring substance use and mental health concerns.

Mellisa Ashley (BSc, M.Nutri.Diet, APD) is a clinical dietitian with over 22 years' experience working across a range of clinical specialties, initially in paediatrics at The Children's Hospital, Westmead, and currently with the Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD) Adult Eating Disorders Service as an outpatient and day-program clinician since its inception 15 years ago. Mellisa is currently an active member of the Australia and New Zealand Academy of Eating Disorders (ANZAED), has presented both oral presentations and workshops at the ANZAED annual conferences, and has co-chaired the ANZAED Special Interest Group for Day Hospital Programs. Currently Mellisa holds the position of Convenor for the Dietitians Australia Eating Disorders Interest Group and is involved in several research projects investigating both the training and education needs of graduating, new graduation dietitians, and experienced dietitians in the area of eating disorders with both the University of Sydney and the University of Wollongong. Additionally, Mellisa has completed additional training in Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Eating Disorders and Family-Based Therapy and has had the privilege of being published in several peer-reviewed journals.
