In this presentation Caroline Deen and Kani Thompson from Apunipima Cape York Health Council will briefly describe how the nutrition team work with remote Aboriginal communities in Cape York to address the nutrition priorities identified by communities. Caroline will provide an overview, using the NHMRC research steps, and Kani will run through an example of a past project focused on optimal infant nutrition.

Speakers:

Kani Thompson has worked as a Community Nutritionist at Apunipima Cape York Health Council based in Cairns and working in Cape York since 2015. Kani has worked in various public health and community nutrition roles for over 10 years based in Cairns and working in Cape York, the Torres Strait and Yarrabah. Kani’s focus work areas have included maternal and infant nutrition, reducing sugar-sweetened beverages; achieving healthy lifestyles. Kani has a Health Worker background and worked in the North Burnett region. Kani is a Torres Strait Islander woman whose family is from Saibai Island.

Caroline Deen is working as a Research Officer on a remote food security research project at Apunipima Cape York Health Council based in Cairns but working across 4 communities in Cape York. She has previously worked as a public health dietitian/nutritionist for three years in the Northern Territory working across Central Australian remote communities then in East Arnhem Land before joining Apunipima last year in March. She has previously worked in nutrition policy in Victoria and in Fiji. Caroline has always had a passion for health equity, specifically for indigenous populations, and completed a masters of public health soon after graduating as a dietitian. She is a proud Kamiloroi woman whose mob come from Moree.
