The Centre for Advanced Learning (CAL) is excited to bring you the Research Foundations for Dietitians Evergreen course.

Audience: this course is designed for dietitians with 1 – 3 years’ experience in practice. This course can also be used as a refresher if you are returning to practice within this area.

Learning outcomes:
  • Increase understanding of evaluating a range of scientific literature
  • Describe the purpose of undertaking research in nutrition and dietetics (N&D)
  • Understand research design and methods in the context of N&D and possible methods of application in an N&D setting
  • Understand how dietary assessment methods and statistical tests are used in N&D research
  • Develop clear and specific aims and objectives as well as methodology and evaluation to answer nutrition-related issues in a variety of settings

Course overview:

Over 4 modules, this course provides information, resources, recommended reading and interactive activities to enhance your active learning experience.

Module 1 is called 'Research methods for nutrition and dietetic research'. The aim of this module is to provide an overview of research methods for nutrition and dietetic research, and to guide you through identifying a research problem, writing a research question, learning about study designs, and choosing the most appropriate study design.

Module 2 is called 'Dietary assessment methods used in research'. The aim of this module is to focus on dietary assessment methods, and how to apply these specifically to nutrition projects.

Module 3 is called 'Basic biostatistics in nutrition research'. The aim of this module is to provide an overview of basic statistics used in nutrition research.

Module 4 is called 'Practical considerations when planning a research project'. The aim of this module is to explore the practical considerations when undertaking research, such as forming a research team, the resources needed, and ethics applications.


Access to the course: new registrants will be automatically uploaded to the Learning Management System (LMS). Instructions for accessing the course will be included in the order confirmation email. Registrants will have access to the course for 12 months from their enrolment date.

Format: Evergreen courses are entirely online and self-paced.

CPD hours: this course is worth 20 CPD hours.

Certificate: upon completion of the course, you will be able to download your Professional Certificate from the LMS.
