Type 1 Diabetes  Nutrition In Practice

Audience: This event was designed for dietitians with 3+ years’ experience in Type 1 diabetes practice or who have completed the Type 1 Diabetes Management for Dietitians online course. This event was originally created as a face to face event, however, due to COVID-19 and travel restrictions, this event will be Virtual until further notice.

Learning Objectives:

  • An understanding of diabetes technologies and medications used in T1D management
  • Describing strategies to match insulin dosages to nutritional needs and adjust insulin and food intake to exercise
  • An understanding of the nutrition implications related to common diabetes related complications
  • Development of skills in effective communication and relationship building with clients and the multidisciplinary team.

Case-studies presented: 

  • Case Study 1: T1 diabetes and Exercise. This will include carbohydrate counting, CGM traces, trouble shooting regarding different insulin regimes and use of different insulin delivery devices and technology.

    Case Study 2: T1 diabetes and  Coeliac disease.  This will include carbohydrate counting, CGM traces, trouble shooting regarding different insulin regimes and use of different insulin delivery devices and technology.

 

Speaker Bios:

Rachel Freeman BHSc (Nut & Diet), MSc (Diabetes), AdvAPD, CDE

Rachel has been an APD since 2003 and CDE since 2008. She has worked across many states and territories in Australia in varying dietetic roles including public health systems and private sectors. From 2011-2013 Rachel continued clinical work as a Diabetes Dietitian and Diabetes Educator for NSW Health. During this time, Rachel was also involved in national policy reviews and national guideline development for various projects relating to people with diabetes. As Professional Services and Education Manager at ADEA, Rachel responds to all enquiries from members, health care professionals and the general public regarding professional matters relating to diabetes education, management and care. She continues to mentor upcoming APDs and CDEs, contributes to the development of key guidelines, teaching resources and policies regarding diabetes management and most recently co-authored the pre-diabetes position statement: A position statement on screening and management of prediabetes in adults in primary care in Australia.

Ashley Ng

Ashley is a diabetes advocate, accredited practicing dietitian and lecturer at La Trobe University. Her diabetes advocacy began with a blog on living with diabetes called Bittersweet Diagnosis. To date, her volunteerism has spanned across the International Diabetes Federation, Diabetes Australia, Diabetes Victoria and Diabetes Camps Victoria. In 2016, she co-founded Beta Change - an organisation with an aim to foster collaboration between diabetes stakeholders towards creating positive change and up-skill future advocates and leaders within the diabetes community. Ashley has also completed her PhD in the field of mHealth use in diabetes education in young adults with diabetes during life transitions. Through her own lived experiences with the healthcare system and research, she has developed a passion in digital health and chronic disease management and education.
