Assessing Research Quality: An Indigenous Perspective

This webinar is brought to you by the Dietitians Australia Education Centre as part of NAIDOC Week (2023).

3 July 2023 at 12:00pm - 1:00pm (AEST, Canberra/Sydney/Melbourne/Brisbane time)
3 July 2023 at 11:30am - 12:30pm (ACST)
3 July 2023 at 10:00am - 11:00pm (AWST)

About the webinar:

The lack of attention to Indigenous epistemologies and, more broadly, Indigenous values in primary research, is mirrored in the standardised critical appraisal tools used to guide evidence-based practice and systematic reviews and meta-syntheses. Failure to tailor the research questions, design, analysis, dissemination, and knowledge translation to capture understandings that are specific to Indigenous peoples results in research of limited acceptability and benefit and potentially harms Indigenous peoples. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Quality Appraisal Tool has been developed to assess the quality of health research from an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspective. The tool privileges Indigenous epistemologies, values, and principles for ethical research. Through the uptake of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Quality Appraisal Tool it is possible to improve the quality and transparency of research with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Apply it to practice:

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Quality Appraisal Tool is the first tool to appraise research quality from the perspective of Indigenous peoples. Through the uptake of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander QAT it is possible to improve the quality and transparency of research with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Speaker:

Stephen Harfield is a Narungga and Ngarrindjeri man from South Australia, and PhD candidate with the School of Public Health at the University of Queensland and Senior Research Fellow with the UQ Poche Centre for Indigenous Health.
