This event will begin with guest speaker Jaden Briggs, Indigenous facilitator, who will lead a yarning session exploring Indigenous native foods and food sovereignty. Jaden will share insights into the cultural, historical, and contemporary significance of First Nations food systems, highlighting connections between food, Country, community, and self-determination. Participants will also be introduced to native ingredients such as lemon myrtle, wattleseed, and Kakadu plum within this broader cultural context.
As part of the Native Foods Recipe Book Club, participants will receive a curated selection of four recipes featuring Australian native ingredients, along with an ingredient guide. Prior to the event, participants are encouraged to prepare one recipe to support hands-on engagement with native foods. Following the yarning session, participants will take part in a guided reflective activity, drawing on the native food recipe they prepared at home. This discussion will provide an opportunity to reflect on experiences sourcing ingredients, preparing dishes, and engaging with new flavours and cooking methods. Participants will be invited to share reflections, ask questions, and learn from each other in a culturally safe and respectful space.
Participants are encouraged to approach both the at-home cooking and webinar participation with curiosity, cultural respect, and an appreciation of native foods as part of living knowledge systems and ongoing connections to Country.
This session supports reconciliation by privileging Indigenous knowledges, strengthening cultural awareness, and building confidence to engage with native foods in a respectful and informed way.
This webinar is brought to you by the Dietitians Australia Education Centre and the Dietitians Australia Reconciliation Action Plan Working Group (2026).

Application into practice:
Participants will be able to apply learnings by incorporating principles of Indigenous food sovereignty into culturally safe dietetic practice, including recognising the importance of Country, community, and Indigenous-led knowledge systems. This can support more respectful engagement with native foods and strengthen culturally responsive approaches in nutrition education, policy, and community work.
Speaker:
Jaden Briggs is a proud Yorta-Yorta and Gunai-kurnai Yenbena living on the lands of the Mununjali/Gugingin clans where they were raised. Since Jaden was young they have had a keen interest in their culture, ceremony, music, dance and bush tucka. Growing, harvesting and hunting their native food plays a big part in Jaden's commitment to their life journey. Struggling with lifestyle health issues as a teen and adult made them look deeper into reconnecting with the strong, healthy and sustainable food from our country. Fostering this relationship between their land, food, culture, and wider Australia is where Jaden sees reconciliation truly becoming what it's supposed to be.
