This joint initiative webinar with COSA Nutrition Group will begin with an overview of implementation science methodology, providing a clear and practical foundation for understanding how evidence-based interventions can be effectively integrated into real-world oncology settings.
This will be followed by two case-based presentations showcasing real-life projects that have successfully applied implementation science approaches within oncology nutrition.
Attendees will gain insight into the challenges and opportunities of translating research into practice, learn from practical examples, and explore strategies to enhance the uptake and sustainability of nutrition interventions in cancer care.
This webinar is ideal for clinicians, researchers, and healthcare professionals interested in advancing evidence-based practice and improving patient outcomes in oncology nutrition.
This webinar is brought to you by the Dietitians Australia Oncology Interest Group in partnership with the Clinical Oncology Society of Australia Nutrition Group (2026).
From Paper to Practice: Transforming Oncology Nutrition Through Implementation Science
30 July 2026 at 12:00pm - 1:00pm (AEST, Canberra/Sydney/Melbourne/Brisbane/Hobart time)
30 July 2026 at 11:30am - 12:30pm (ACST, Adelaide/Darwin time)
30 July 2026 at 10:00am - 11:00am (AWST, Perth time)
Applications into practice:
-Utilising malnutrition screening in Cancer Care Outpatients as a practical example of how implementation science frameworks can help dietitians understand their local context and develop tailored strategies to drive sustainable, patient-centred change in their own practice.
- Dietitians will obtain an understanding of key implementation science concepts, which can be applied to both improving clinical practice and undertaking implementation research.
-Provides a real-world example using the COSA Cancer-related Malnutrition and Sarcopenia Implementation Toolkit to improve adherence to evidence-based nutrition care guidelines in a high-volume oncology centre. It provides practical strategies for identifying evidence-practice gaps in nutrition care processes, engaging stakeholders, and tailoring nutrition care pathways to your local context.
Speakers:
Elise Treleaven is an Accredited Practising Dietitian and Team Leader with over 10 years of experience in Oncology at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital. She has particular interests in the prevention and management of malnutrition, person-centred care initiatives, and Geriatric Oncology. Elise contributes to quality improvement and research in these areas, with a focus on translating evidence into meaningful, patient-centred practice across the oncology setting.
Dr Angela Byrnes is a Research Fellow in Implementation Science at the Australian Centre for Health Services Innovation at QUT and a Senior Clinical and Research Dietitian at Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. Angela’s research focuses on translating evidence into practice, with particular expertise in sustainability of complex interventions, surgical care, and care of older adults. Her work aims to improve patient outcomes by embedding evidence-based nutrition care into routine clinical practice.
Shane McAuliffe is a Senior Dietitian and Clinician Researcher at Chris O’Brien Lifehouse (COBL) and a PhD Candidate at the University of New South Wales (UNSW). His work is focused on the implementation of evidence-based nutrition guidelines for patients undergoing surgery for Head and Neck Cancer (HNC). This work has resulted in the formation of a pre-surgical, supportive care-led pathway, which has provided a foundation to support wider development of a multimodal prehabilitation program. He is also a contributor to a national implementation toolkit to support the uptake of the Clinical Oncology Society of Australia (COSA) Cancer Related Malnutrition and Sarcopenia Position Statement recommendations into clinical practice.
