Your voice matters

We're advocates for dietetic and nutrition issues in our community, and we want your voice to be part of our work.

Contribute to submissions

Where possible, we invite members to contribute to our submissions to government and industry.

There are many ways you can get involved:

  • comment on a submission drafted by our staff
  • join a working group to help research and draft a submission
  • respond to submissions independently to reinforce our message, or give an alternative view

Together, we'll advocate for important and lasting change in public nutrition and health.

We've recently made submissions to:

  • support reforms to training for Personal Care Workers to better meet the needs of aged care clients
  • improve the health and well-being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in remote locations
  • improve nutrition care and services for people with cognitive disability
  • improve veterans' access to nutrition support products
  • support mandatory pregnancy warning labels on alcoholic beverages

Aged Care Royal Commission - a case study

The Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety gave us the chance to discuss nutritional care for older Australians, and the role of Accredited Practising Dietitians (APDs).

To prepare our submission, we set up a working party with 8 members experienced in aged care.

The right to adequate food is essential for the wellbeing of older Australians.

We want to improve outcomes for older people, but there isn't enough support to involve APDs in aged care.

APDs should play a role in strengthening food and nutrition systems for older Australians.

Our submission discusses:

  • malnutrition in older Australians
  • aged care services in the community
  • nutrition in residential aged care
  • aged care standards and nutrition
  • nutrition training for the aged care workforce
  • nutrition and dementia
  • nutrition and pressure injury
  • nutrition in end of life care

In March 2019, on behalf of our members, we presented our submission to the royal commission.

Our submission includes recommendations for:

  • government
  • community aged care services
  • residential aged care homes
  • accreditation surveyors
  • training the aged care workforce
  • care of older people with dementia
  • care of older people with wounds
  • end of life care

After presenting our submission, the commission invited Dietitians Australia to attend a hearing.

In October 2019, the Aged Care Quality and Safety’s Interim Report, 'Neglect' was tabled in the Australian Parliament. Dietitians Australia is listed as an expert in the report.
