Code of conduct for dietitians

Our professional standards

It's important dietitians deliver high-quality services wherever they practice. That's why we've developed professional standards for you to follow.

Our Code of Conduct for Dietitians & Nutritionists sets our expectations for the professional behaviour of dietitians practising in Australia.

Read our Code of Conduct for Dietitians & Nutritionists

Our standards exist to:

  • support high-quality practice
  • promote safe and evidence-based services
  • guide ethical decisions
  • encourage ongoing professional learning

Our standards also support consumer rights.

All members and Accredited Practising Dietitians (APDs) must follow our professional standards.

Code of Conduct for Dietitians & Nutritionists

We introduced the current Code of Conduct as part of the 2022 membership renewals.

It has replaced 4 separate documents and brings them together into one easy-to-understand format.

Our new Code is comprehensive; it applies to all types of dietetic practice in all contexts, whether you’re seeing patients via telehealth, or working in a policy setting.

The Code is categorised into 7 key principles, making it clearer to understand and use. It is consistent with the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law Act 2009. This includes the standards governed by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

Accredited Practising Dietitians

People trust the experience and abilities of APDs.

APDs must follow our standards and the rules of the Accredited Practising Dietitians Program.

Strength of our standards

As a self-regulated profession, we must have strong professional standards.

The APD Program meets the standards of the National Alliance of Self Regulating Health Professionals.

Our standards are as good as, or better than, other health professions.

Complaints about dietitians

If a person has concerns about your conduct, they can make a complaint.

We follow a fair complaints process governed by our complaints by-law.
