Oral Health and Nutrition: Collaborative opportunities for Accredited Practising Dietitians, nutrition and oral health professionals

This webinar introduces the Joint Position Statement between Dietitians Australia and Dental Health Services Victoria on Interdisciplinary Collaboration between Accredited Practising Dietitians, Nutrition and Oral Health Professionals. The statement is endorsed by interested peak bodies and highlights the importance of collaboration for disease prevention and optimisation of individual and public health outcomes. 

Dr John Rogers, former Principal Oral Health Policy Advisor in the Victorian Department and now a Principal Fellow at the University of Melbourne Dental School, joins us to provide overview of the position statement. This will be followed by three real-life case studies will be presented that demonstrate how dietitians, nutrition and oral health professionals can work together for the benefit of client and public health outcomes.  A panel discussion will follow to de-brief on the cases and answer questions from the audience.

Case study presentations will include:

Case 1: Nutrition and Oral Health Advocacy as a Community Dietitian working in Disability. Presented by Amanda Eldridge, Accredited Practising Dietitian, Active Ability.

Case 2: Oral health and nutritional challenges in Head and Neck Cancer. Presented by Sophie Beaumont and Kate Graham, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.
This presentation outlines some of the major challenges faced by patients undergoing treatment for head and neck cancer and some of the strategies required to help overcome these. A case report will be used to help outline some of the challenges and side-effects from head and neck cancer treatment and how these were managed.

Case 3: Nutrition and Oral Health Promotion in Victoria: Population Health Programs, Presented by Laura Ayres, Cancer Council Victoria.
The Achievement Program and Smiles 4 Miles are population health programs available in Victoria to support nutrition and oral health promotion in early childhood settings. This case presentation will demonstrate how these programs collaborate and support early childhood services to create a health promoting environment.  


Speakers:

Amanda Eldridge has been working as a community dietitian in the disability space with Active Ability for the past three years. After placement experience and mentorship from Mrs. Lindy Sank (APD, Sydney Dental Hospital), she has become passionate about advocating for the dental health of people with disability and using nutrition to aid with the prevention of dental disease in this vulnerable population.

Dr. John Rogers has over 45 years’ experience in public dentistry and community health in Australia and overseas. He has managed a community health centre and was Principal Oral Health Policy Advisor in the Victorian Department of Health from 1990-2019, John trained as a dentist and holds MPH and PhD qualifications. He is currently a Principal Fellow at the University of Melbourne Dental School.

Kate Graham is an APD and PEG credentialed dietitian currently working with the Head & Neck oncology team at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. Kate is passionate about optimizing nutrition and preventing malnutrition for her patients through early intervention and collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team. Kate endeavors to assist patients to return to eating and drinking and have a high quality of life post treatment. Team work with speech pathology and dentists within Peter Mac and in the community is essential to accomplish these aims.

Laura Ayres has a background in public health and health promotion and experience working in community health. Laura joined the Achievement Program at Cancer Council Victoria in 2019 and has been supporting early childhood services and schools to implement health and wellbeing practices.

Sophie Beaumont is a dental practitioner and head of the dental oncology department at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. Sophie has many years of experience in both the private and public dental sector and is passionate about achieving oral health equity for head and neck cancer patients. Sophie strives to maximise collaboration with the teams within the hospital and other healthcare providers to achieve optimal outcomes for cancer patients. Working closely with the head and neck dietician team is integral to achieving these goals.
