Eating Disorders Online Workshop for Dietitians
This webinar is brought to you by the Dietitians Australia Eating Disorders Interest Group (2021).

This one-day online workshop hosted by Audrey Raffelt (Clinical Psychology Registrar) and Kate Lane (Accredited Practising Dietitian) from Centre for Integrative Health will follow the three key steps in the NEDC and DA Eating Disorders and Dietitian Decision Making Tool (Know, Observe/Listen/Ask, Act) to provide a broad introduction to the role of the dietitian in the treatment of eating disorders. The workshop will consist of four sessions with the following key learning outcomes:

Session 1: KNOW
Participants will:
- Consolidate their understanding of the DSM-5 criteria for eating disorders, the transdiagnostic nature of the illness and the limits of diagnostic criteria in the detection, assessment and effective treatment of eating disorders.
- Explore the role of the dietitian and scope of dietetic practice in effective eating disorder treatment with reference to the ANZAED Practice and Training Standards for Dietitians Providing Eating Disorder Treatment and Dietitians Australia Eating Disorders Role Statement.
- Identify population groups at increased risk of developing eating, weight and body image concerns.
- Recognise behavioural, physical and psychological symptoms of an eating disorder.

Session 2: OBSERVE/LISTEN/ASK
Participants will:
- Understand and apply screening tools and/or questions to assess for risk of an eating disorder.
- Practice communication of concerns about a possible eating disorder to a client, GP or other treating health professional, as well as initiation of onward referral to establish an appropriate multidisciplinary treatment team.
- Learn the key domains for Nutrition Assessment and Nutrition Diagnosis for an eating disorder (or possible eating disorder) within the Nutrition Care Process.
- Discuss the management of immediate nutritional, medical or psychiatric risk identified during assessment.

Session 3: ACT
Participants will:
- Differentiate between a dietitian with the skills, experience and support systems to fully manage a client with an eating disorder, and a dietitian who may refer on following nutrition assessment.
- Explore the factors to be considered in “setting up treatment well”.
- Discuss the importance and working dynamics of a multidisciplinary treatment team.
- Develop an understanding of the basic counselling skills required for the safe and effective treatment of eating disorders.
- Develop an understanding of the basic dietetic treatment approaches used in eating disorders and how these can be integrated with a course of evidence-based therapy.
- Describe the eligibility criteria, period of referral validity, maximum number of sessions and reporting requirements for the dietetic Eating Disorder Management Plan item numbers under Medicare.

Session 4: ACT
Participants will:
- Discuss the possible risks of standard dietetic interventions for those experiencing an eating disorder.
- Understand the common pitfalls and challenges when working with eating disorders.
- Identify the limits of scope of practice and avenues for further training.
- Appreciate the value of, and identify opportunities for, professional supervision and self-reflection practices.

Speakers:

Kate Lane is a Senior Accredited Practising Dietitian at Centre for Integrative Health (CFIH), Brisbane's premier private multidisciplinary eating disorder treatment centre. Kate has completed additional training in leading evidence-based eating disorder treatments (CBT-E, FBT, SSCM) and works closely with CFIH's team of psychologists and psychiatrist to deliver truly integrative dietetic care for individuals with eating and body image concerns. Kate's practice is firmly grounded in the Health at Every Size® and Non-Diet Approach® paradigms.

Prior to becoming a registered psychologist, Audrey Raffelt worked in the field of neuroscience. She was involved in a range of research projects investigating the impacts of stroke on emotions, behaviour and functioning, exploring new treatment options to improve recovery. Audrey then completed her Masters in Clinical Psychology at the University of Queensland in 2019. She has experience in the assessment and treatment of a range of mental health and emotional difficulties including anxiety, depression, relationship distress, parenting support, personality disorders, and trauma. She worked across a number of setting including inpatient care, education, aged-care, and private practice. Audrey has specialist training in providing evidence-based treatment and assessment for people with all forms of eating disorders, and across all ages from small children to later-life. Audrey is trained in both family-based and individual treatment approaches for eating disorders.
