Deadly Science

Deadly Science
The webinar is brought to you by the DA Education Centre and the DA Policy and Advocacy Team as part of the Dietitians Australia NAIDOC Week Campaign (2021).

Corey Tutt is a proud Kamilaroi man, Indigenous mentor, STEM champion, 2020 NSW Young Australian of the Year, and founder of 'DeadlyScience'. Corey will talk about DeadlyScience, an initiative that provides science books and early reading materials to remote schools in Australia. Corey will discuss his journey to date, as well as discuss ways in which others (including dietitians) may be able to encourage a love for science among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.

Speaker:

When Corey Tutt learned that there was a remote school with only fifteen books in the whole library (five of which were dictionaries) he set out to make change. To date, DeadlyScience has provided over 15,000 culturally appropriate books focused on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) as well as telescopes, microscopes and other equipment to spark student interest. Schools involved with DeadlyScience have reported a 25% increase in engagement in STEM and increased attendance. As a board member of Science Technology Australia, Corey is contributing to the development of their first Reconciliation Action Plan to further encourage participation and inclusion of First Nations peoples in STEM. Corey's passion for Indigenous education has also been recognised through various awards including the CSIRO Indigenous STEM Champion 2019, AMP Tomorrow Maker 2019, ABC Trailblazer 2019, 2020 Eureka Prize finalist, and 2020 Human Rights Hero.

This webinar will be hosted by Natalie Gray, the student representative on the Dietitians Australia Reconciliation Action Plan Working Group (RAPWG).
