Health Promotion: Improving Aboriginal Men's Health

Health Promotion: Improving Aboriginal Men's Health
Community-led Health Promotion Initiatives Designed to Improve the Health Outcomes of Men Living in a Very Remote Aboriginal Community

The webinar is brought to you by the DA Education Centre and the DA Policy and Advocacy Team as part of the Dietitians Australia NAIDOC Week Campaign (2021).

Shane Walsh (Aboriginal Health Promotion Officer) silver medalist Sydney 2000 and Dan Shyhun (Public Health Dietitian) are excited to share their insights and achievements on being invited to develop community-led health promotion initiatives aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of young men living in a very remote community. According to the Australian Institute of Health Welfare, people living in remote and very remote regions on average experience higher rates of risky health behaviours, poorer access to health services, and worse health than people living in regional and urban Australia. They will briefly discuss the health promotion framework that informed the development and delivery of the health promotion initiatives. This will be followed by a discussion on the project plan and some of their achievements they've had working closely with young Luritja men.

Speakers:

Daniel Shyhun is a public health dietitian with the Central Australia Health Service Primary and Public Health Care providing outreach services from Alice Springs to very remote communities in the Central Australia region. He develops networks and works in partnership with community members and service providers to identify, plan, implement and evaluate initiatives that aim to improve nutritional status. With a strengths-based approach, he is passionate about developing meaningful and trusting relationships with Aboriginal men on Luritja Country.

Shane Walsh, a proud Aboriginal man and former Silver Medalist Sydney 2000 Paralympic swimmer, works as an Aboriginal Health Promotion Officer. Shane currently works in the area of men's health promotion at the Central Australia Health Service Primary and Public Health Care Outreach Services in Alice Springs, servicing remote communities in Central Northern Territory. Shane implements, facilitates and evaluates health promotion programs and activities, together with other multidisciplinary teams in the outreach program. The team aims to improve remote community health and wellbeing outcomes. It is his passion to empower men in the community to have better health and facilitate good life choices through health promotion.

This webinar will be hosted by Gina Absalom, Public Health Dietitian working in remote First Nations communities in Central Australia.
