The Centre for Advanced Learning (CAL) is excited to bring you the Nutrition Related Care in Paediatric Diabetes Evergreen course - Module 4: Management of type 1 diabetes.

Audience: this course is designed for dietitians with 3+ years of experience working with paediatric clients, or with adult clients living with diabetes. This course can also be used as a refresher for dietitians returning to practice.

Learning outcomes:
  • Explain the role of insulin and glucose monitoring in the management of type 1 diabetes
  • Identify the different types of insulin and their actions
  • Describe the different options available for insulin delivery, including multiple daily injections (MDI) and insulin pump therapy (IPT), including automated systems
  • Describe the different options available for glucose monitoring
  • Explain the role of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) in the management of type 1 diabetes
  • Describe the recommended glycaemic targets, including CGM metrics, for children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes
  • Explain the importance of a comprehensive growth assessment and ongoing monitoring of growth and puberty
  • Describe the symptoms, causes and treatment of hypoglycaemia and hyperglycaemia
  • Describe the risk factors for and management of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA)
  • Explain the importance of education and planning for diabetes sick day management
  • Explain the major risk factors for diabetes-related microvascular and macrovascular complications
  • Identify the importance of regular complication screening in children and adolescents with type 1 and the complication screening process

Course overview:

This module is the fourth of 11 modules in the Nutrition Related Care in Paediatric Diabetes Evergreen course. The aim of this module is to review the management of type 1 diabetes in children and adolescents. We will review the role of insulin and glucose monitoring, different types of insulin, insulin delivery methods, and different options for glucose monitoring. We also discuss glycaemic targets, the importance of growth assessments and monitoring, hypoglycaemia, hyperglycaemia, risk factors and management of diabetic ketoacidosis, the importance of a sick day management plan, risk factors for microvascular and macrovascular complications and the importance of complication screening in young people living with type 1 diabetes.


Access to the course: new registrants will be automatically uploaded to the Learning Management System (LMS). Instructions for accessing the course will be included in the order confirmation email. Registrants will have access to the course for 12 months from their enrolment date.

Format: Evergreen courses are entirely online and self-paced.

CPD hours: this module is worth 1 CPD hour.
