The Centre for Advanced Learning (CAL) is excited to bring you the Nutrition Related Care in Paediatric Diabetes Evergreen course - Module 5: Nutrition for children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes.

Audience: this course is designed for dietitians with 3+ years of experience working with paediatric clients, or with adult clients living with diabetes. This course can also be used as a refresher for dietitians returning to practice.

Learning outcomes:
  • Describe the basic principles of dietary management of type 1 diabetes in children and adolescents
  • Explain the key physiological differences between type 1 and type 2 diabetes in children and adolescents
  • Describe the role of a dietary assessment at diagnosis to inform the design and implementation of an individualised meal plan
  • Discuss the impact of different macronutrients on blood glucose levels and insulin requirements
  • Explain the different methods and purpose of carbohydrate counting
  • Describe the impact of glycaemic index on glucose levels
  • Describe the process for providing nutrition education for children, adolescents and their families
  • Discuss appropriate carbohydrate intake and the use of low-carbohydrate diets in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes

Course overview:

This module is the fifth of 11 modules in the Nutrition Related Care in Paediatric Diabetes Evergreen course. The aim of this module is to review basic principles of dietary management of type 1 diabetes in children and adolescents. We will review the role of a dietary assessment, how to individualise a meal plan, the impact of macronutrients on blood glucose levels and insulin requirements, the purpose and different methods of carbohydrate counting and the impact of glycemic index on glucose levels. We will then delve into nutrition education, appropriate carbohydrate intake and the use of low-carbohydrate diets in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes.


Access to the course: new registrants will be automatically uploaded to the Learning Management System (LMS). Instructions for accessing the course will be included in the order confirmation email. Registrants will have access to the course for 12 months from their enrolment date.

Format: Evergreen courses are entirely online and self-paced.

CPD hours: this module is worth 1 CPD hour.
